Learning to program in <3 weeks

Hi and thank you for visiting 9! The Game's page.

I'm Ankur, and I've been a game developer for (checks calendar) <3 weeks (yes, I know it's a heart, no that wasn't intended). I had no Unity or programming experience until earlier this month (not counting some sick Excel spreadsheets). I hope you enjoy this small microgame of mine. For anyone else who is thinking of dabbling in Unity, I want to share some thoughts as a fellow beginner:

  • Use online resources, like Unity's Junior Programmer course. I have finished ~50% of the course and am now feeling comfortable creating my own projects from scratch. I am sure when I finish the second half, I will look back on this project and see how much faster or robust I could have made it
  • Clunky workarounds work. A lot of my code that should have worked in theory did not work in practice (no doubt due to my own coding errors). However, I was able to create clunky workarounds (e.g., 8 lines of codes, instead of 1 line) to get this game functioning. I also removed features that were taking me too long to develop and that had little added benefit. Said differently, I did not let perfect get in the way of good (at least, I hope it's good)
  • Starting small. I wanted to come up with an original idea that was small, replayable, and buildable in a week. My target audience was my mom, who plays Sudoku and is a math-wiz.
  • I should have play tested. I am already on version 1.2 of this game. When my mom picked up version 1, she could not understand how it worked and found the instructions to be confusing. They still might be confusing - she's my only play tester, and I haven't asked anyone else to try the game as of writing this post.

Thank you for playing my game. I can't wait to see what I can create after 6 weeks of programming!
